A pair of 2003 Pinotage

A couple of Pinotage with some age on, recently tasted:

Kanonkop Pinotage 2003
Stellenbosch, South Africa
€ 20 (hammer price, Munich Online Wine Auction)
Purple/violet colour. A complex nose showing off a quite youthful mulberry expression, with coffee and sweet spicy oak adding to the mix. As soon as you swirl the glass, slightly distracting notes of the not so pleasant aroma of banana draped in acetone appears and somewhat spoils the party. Medium bodied and well balanced, with velvety tannins and the sweet fruit and alcohol offset by good acidity. I don't see this vintage as history book-material, but it sure has a few good years left before descending into decline. (86p, Dec 2012)

Kaapzicht Steytler Vision 2003
Stellenbosch, South Africa
€ 15 (hammer price, Munich Online Wine Auction)
Cab driven Cape Blend with Cabernet Sauvignon (50%) and Pinotage (40%) sharing the center stage as Merlot stays in the back. Deep ruby coloured, with the nose revealing expressive blackcurrant and coffee notes. A hint of acetone also. It starts fresh on the palate, with plenty of savory fruit and more than a hint of smoky oak. The taste reminiscent of coffee liquor chocolate. Fine grained tannins and medium weight. Drink now, it may very well last a few more years, but I don't see it improving any further. (84p, Dec 2012)
